National Pizza Month celebrates pizza’s popularity and its cultural and culinary significance. The idea was first suggested in 1984 by Gerry Durnell, the publisher of Pizza Today Magazine. He intended to praise the pizza business and show some love to the millions of people nationwide who enjoy it every year. The suggestion is that pizza lovers explore new flavors and appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into pizza-making, whether at home or in a local pizzeria.

It’s a great idea, but why October? Turns out October has the highest number of pizza orders in the U.S. National Pizza Month has become so popular that pizzerias, fast-food chains, and grocery stores run special offers, along with national commercial and major social media campaigns across multiple platforms.
How important is pizza to me? After I got my driver’s license, my first solo trip was to Ken’s Pizza on Rogers Avenue in Fort Smith, Arkansas. I picked up a large, pepperoni pizza for the family dinner that night. My Mother prepared a Cobb Salad as a side dish, and she, my Dad, and I washed it all down with Royal Crown Cola. She always went heavy on the ham and egg because that was the only way to get Dad and me to eat a salad willingly. I’ve gotten better about it since then.
If you love pizza as much as I do (and you should!), here are a few ways to celebrate this important day.
- Host a Pizza Party – They’re not just for kids! Gather friends or family for a home pizza-making night or order your favorite pizzas from your favorite take-out places.
- Topping Experimentation – Try unusual combinations like BBQ chicken, pineapple, or gourmet truffle. You can even lay out whatever is in your cabinets or refrigerator to see who is the culinary daredevil in your home.
- Learn to make your own crust – Experience the joy of crafting dough from scratch. Just don’t do it in the middle of your party. People get hungry quickly when pizza is on the menu!
- Visit new pizzerias – Support local pizza-makers by trying different styles such as New York thin crust, Chicago deep dish, or California thin and crispy.
- Use social media to spread the love – Use hashtags like #NationalPizzaMonth and #PizzaLovers to share your favorite toppings, crusts, and pizza parties!
As mentioned above, many specials, combos, and other discounts are available in October. That list includes popular fast-food chains like Domino’s, Papa Murphy’s, and Pizza Hut, as well as restaurants like Blaze Pizza, California Pizza Kitchen, and Marco’s Pizza. Even frozen pizza brands like DiGiorno and Red Baron offer discounts.
There is something for everyone in National Pizza Month; all you have to do is reach out and grab a slice!
