Seven Smart Summertime Savings Steps

Summertime is almost here, and that means vacation season! We work hard all year, and now it’s time to plan that getaway to your favorite beach, amusement park, mountain retreat, or wherever you go to recharge. But before you map out your adventure, pack your bags, and lock the front door, take time to prepare financially as well. The last thing you want on your itinerary is a money mishap.

Here are seven smart steps to take before departure:
1. Set a Realistic Vacation Budget - Carefully estimate your expected costs for transportation, lodging, food, activities, and those fun souvenirs. Travel costs, especially gas and airfare, are often higher than expected, so build in a little extra cushion. A solid spending plan helps you relax and enjoy the trip without worrying about every swipe of your card.
2. Review Upcoming Bill Due Dates - Nothing spoils a great vacation faster than coming home to late fees or past-due notices. Before you leave, pay any bills that will come due while you’re away or set up automatic payments. Don’t count on remembering to log in during your trip. Besides, who wants to pay bills while sitting on the beach?
3. Review Your Credit and Debit Cards - Check expiration dates to make sure none of your cards will expire while you’re away. Notify your bank if you’re traveling, especially internationally, so your card activity doesn’t trigger fraud alerts. Also, review any travel-related perks your cards may offer, such as rental car coverage, trip cancellation insurance, or discounts on lodging and attractions. And always take a backup card in case your primary card is lost, stolen, or locked.
4. Check Your Emergency Fund Before You Go - Make sure you have money set aside for unexpected expenses. A flat tire, delayed flight, or surprise medical bill can quickly derail your plans. Having an emergency fund available can turn a crisis into a manageable inconvenience—and help you keep enjoying your trip.
5. Protect Your Home While You’re Away - A little home prep can prevent costly surprises. Pause mail and package deliveries, especially if you don’t have a secure mailbox. Unplug unnecessary electronics, set lights or security systems on timers, and do a quick walk-through to check for leaks, maintenance issues, or anything else that could become a problem while you’re gone.
6. Avoid the Vacation Spending Trap - It’s easy to overspend when you’re having fun. Plan meals ahead of time. This doesn’t mean PB&J every day, but it does mean spending intentionally. Set a daily spending limit for extras, use cash for discretionary purchases if that helps, and build in one or two planned splurges. The goal is to enjoy your trip without bringing home a financial headache.
7. Proper Planning Protects Your Pleasure and Peace - Military life can be hectic and demanding, which makes time away with family especially valuable. A little financial preparation before you leave can reduce stress, protect your budget, and help you return home rested, refreshed, and still on solid financial footing.
Have a great summer—and travel smart!
