National Investing Day: A Simple Investing Primer for Military Members & Families

May 1 is National Investing Day, which makes it the perfect time to talk about something many service members and families know they should do…but often feel unsure about where to start.

Investing doesn’t have to be complicated, intimidating, or something you “deal with later.” In fact, the earlier you understand the basics, the more power you have to build long‑term financial security—no matter where the military sends you next. Let’s break it down in a simple, no‑nonsense way.

  • What Is Investing, Really?
    • At its core, investing is just putting your money to work so it can grow over time.
    • Instead of sitting in a checking account for no reason, your money gets assigned a mission: grow, earn, and support your future.
  • Why Military Members Should Care
    • Military life comes with unique advantages—and challenges. Investing early helps you:
      • Build wealth even during frequent PCS moves
      • Prepare for life after the military
      • Take advantage of benefits like the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)
      • Create financial stability for your family, even during deployments
      • Make the most of compound growth
  • The Magic Word: Compound Growth
    • Compound growth is what happens when your money earns money… and then that money earns money.
    • Think of it like this: You plant one seed, and over time it grows into a tree that grows more seeds. The earlier you plant, the bigger the forest.
    • Time is your greatest asset—especially if you’re in your 20s, 30s, or 40s.
  • Basic Investing Terms
    • Stocks - Pieces of ownership in a company. When the company grows, your investment can grow too.
    • Bonds - Loans you give to governments or companies. They pay you back with interest. Generally less risky than stocks.
    • Funds (Mutual Funds & Index Funds) - Bundles of many stocks or bonds. Think of them as the “combo meal” of investing—simple, diversified, and easy to manage.
    • TSP (Thrift Savings Plan) - The military’s version of a 401(k). You choose your investment funds, contribute monthly, and let time do the heavy lifting.
    • Risk - How much your investment might go up or down. Higher risk can mean higher reward—but also bigger swings.
    • Diversification - Not putting all your eggs in one basket. Funds help with this automatically.
  • Where Should Military Members Start?
  1. Contribute to Your TSP  - Even a small monthly amount helps. If you’re under the Blended Retirement System (BRS), don’t miss out on matching contributions—that’s free money!
  2. Know Your Funds - The TSP offers simple options:
    1. G Fund – very low risk
    2. F & C Funds – bonds and large U.S. companies
    3. S Fund – smaller U.S. companies
    4. I Fund – international companies
    5. L Funds – “set it and forget it” mixes based on your retirement timeline
  3. Start Small, Stay Consistent - You don’t need thousands to begin. You just need consistency.
  4. Don’t Try to Time the Market - Even the pros can’t do it reliably. Your best strategy is steady contributions over time.
  • For Military Families
    • Spouses often face career interruptions, PCS moves, and childcare challenges. Investing can help bridge those gaps by:
      • Building long-term security
      • Supporting retirement even with inconsistent income
      • Creating a financial cushion during transitions
    • If you have access to a 401(k), IRA, or spousal TSP contributions—use them.
  • The Bottom Line
    • Investing isn’t about being perfect. It’s about starting.
    • National Investing Day is a reminder that your financial future deserves attention today—not “someday.”
    • Whether you’re active duty, Guard, Reserve, a military spouse, or a veteran, you have powerful tools at your fingertips. Learn the basics, take small steps, and let time and consistency do the rest.
    • Your future self—and your future bank account—will thank you.
