Finding Community Fast After A Spring PCS

By Queen8mo

3 min read

Spring PCS season is here, and if you have pets, you already know the truth. You aren’t just moving your household, you’re moving your whole little pack. Between vet records, travel crates, “Where is the leash?” panic, and your pet acting like the moving boxes are a personal attack, it can feel like a lot. The upside during the chaos is that pets are one of the fastest ways to find community after PCS.

Lets get you and you little battle buddies connected quickly and set up for success.

First, build your pets routine. When your pet feels off, everything feels off. Before you worry about meeting people get two routines locked in. Find a daily walk route, or a go-to potty spot. Bonus points if you can find a consistent feeding time. Pets thrive on predictability, and routines naturally put you in the same places at the same time. That is exactly how familiar faces turn into friendly conversations.

Try to identify your pet’s essentials in the first 7-10 days. First things first, find a vet (primary and emergency). Second, find a local pet store you like. Then, find a park or trail you can visit often, and a groomer if you need one. When you have your go to spots, you stop feeling like you’re wandering and start feeling like you belong.

Let your pets do the introductions. Most pet owners love sharing local recommendations. You don’t need a big speech. Pets make conversation easy.

Try these low-pressure openers:

  • “How old is yours?”
  • “Do you know any good walking trails around here?”
  • “We just PCS’d in. Do you like your vet?”

Use the military community shortcuts. Our families love to share pet info like it’s a life skill, because it is.

Tap into some of the resources below:

  • Local community pet groups
  • PCS and base community Facebook group pages
  • Word of mouth recommendations from neighbors, coworkers, and spouses

Resource Spotlight:

PCS With Pets is a one stop shop for PCS’ing with pets. It is a portal built for military families. They share CONUS and OCONUS checklists, plus a newsletter, and community forum where you can ask questions and swap tips with others in the thick of PCS season.

If you want results quickly, try this simple plan during your first week. Save your vet and emergency vet in your phone. Walk the same route 3 times. Visit one park or trail and go back once more. Try starting 3 short conversations, and ask early for pet sitter recommendations. Springs PCS can feel like a whirlwind, but pets are built in bridge to community. A steady routine, a few got to places, and a couple of friendly hellos can help make a new duty station feel like home a lot sooner for both of you.
