Let's Make Our Pet an Ornament

Moving to a new duty station during the holidays can feel like trying to unwrap presents while wearing mittens, exciting, a little chaotic, and slightly overwhelming. This year, I wanted to make the season feel cozy and personal, not just for me but for my furry co-pilot too. That’s when the idea hit me: why not create personalized Christmas ornaments using my pet’s hair and their name?

Yes, you read that right, hair. Just trust me, it’s magical. Every little tuft tucked into the ornament feels like a hug from home, a reminder that even though we’re miles away from family, the love and memories we’ve built with our pets travel with us.

The process is simple, festive, and incredibly satisfying. I chose clear plastic ornaments so I could see the fluffy tufts inside, added my pet’s name in black paint…you could use glitter to sprinkle in a little holiday sparkle, too. It instantly made our new tree feel like our tree, full of personality and warmth. My dog spent the whole time supervising, tail wagging, like he knew he was part of something special.

What I love most is that this tradition is portable. Every PCS move, every new duty station, these ornaments can come with us. They’re a way to mark the seasons, celebrate our pets, and create lasting memories, small, cozy reminders that “home” is wherever we are together.

Make one ornament per pet each year. Over time, your tree becomes a timeline of adventures, moves, and holidays shared with your furry family members. Add a PCS tag sticker to it if you want too. If your pet’s hair isn’t cooperative, a favorite toy tucked inside works just as well, it’s all about personalization and love.

This year our little tree sparkles with memories, joy, and the unmistakable feeling of home. I can’t wait to see how this tradition grows, and travels with us, one PCS at a time.
