Traveling with pets can be stressful so it’s important that you prepare for your trip in advance. There are many things you can research online, but there are always little things that aren’t taken into consideration that the airlines or TSA don’t explain. The first thing to take into consideration is the size of your pet, because this will determine if they are able to travel onboard the aircraft or if they will need to be checked in. Some people may not realize that larger pets travel underneath the airplane with the luggage.

The first thing you’ll need to do is research airlines as all carriers do not transport pets. You also need to be prepared to pay additional fees as traveling can be costly. If possible, you should look at booking direct flights, to minimize travel time and stress on your pet.
You should consult with the airlines as you could be required to show vaccination records or a health certificate to travel. These certificates typically have to be issued within a certain timeframe prior to travel. This can cause additional work for you as most vet appointments are booked up months in advance.
The time of year you decide to travel will be an important consideration as some airlines require a certain temperature prior to take off and a certain temperature at your destination. This can be difficult when traveling in the hot summer months. You should always have a backup plan or someone on standby to pick up your pet at the airport if they cannot make the flight.

Another important thing you’ll need to do once you make the decision to fly with your pet is to ensure that they are crate trained. This can be difficult for pets that typically roam free all day. Being locked in a kennel can be scary and stressful. You’ll also want to be sure your pet is collared and the correct contact information is listed on their tags.
On your travel day, arrive at the airport early and be prepared to ask questions for clarification if need be. You may be responsible for ensuring your pet has potty breaks even if they are checked and not traveling inside the plane with you and don’t forget that prior to going through the TSA scanners be sure to remove your pet from their carrier.
Traveling with your pet means there are extra tasks and preparation to be done. However, if you write everything down, you’ll find the process a little easier. Don’t forget to utilize the resources available to you on PCS with Pets!
