Survival Mode: It’s Just You & the Pets

When the house is empty, your spouse is away, and you’re holding down the fort solo with your furry crew. Survival mode isn’t about thriving or getting a five-star review.  It’s about minimal friction and maximum sanity. Keeping the peace requires a blend of low-effort entertainment, gentle routines, and accepting that your pets are just furry toddlers with worse impulse control than you.

So here’s how to navigate the solo shift, keep their spirits high, and protect your own energy level until reinforcements arrive:

  • Strategic Screen Time & Soundscapes:
    • Yes, Put Bluey On for Your Pup: It may sound like a joke, but dogs perceive color primarily in shades of blue and yellow. Bright blue-dominated shows like Bluey can visually stimulate them and hold their focus while you take a breather.

    • Tail-wags & White Noise: The silence makes every little creak of the floorboards sound suspicious. Leaving something on the tv, light white noise, or your favorite podcast can help keep the house from feeling too quiet for them. Allowing their hyper-vigilance to take a break.

  • Brain Games & Busy Paws

    • Pupsicles & Peace: Spread some wet dog food, 100% pure pumpkin puree, or plain Greek yogurt (not containing Xylitol) onto a silicone lick mat and freeze it. Repetitive licking releases endorphins that naturally soothe a pet’s nervous system and lower their heart rate.

    • The Muffin Tin Puzzle: Sprinkle some kibble into a muffin tin and cover each cup with a tennis ball. This will force them to use their brain and nose to work for their dinner, giving you 15 minutes of uninterrupted peace.
    • The Towel Roll Scatter: For non-chewers, you can roll their meal or treats inside an old bath towel. Sniffing and unrolling the towel will help burn some of their energy faster than a routine trip to the backyard to play.

  • Little Habits, for Happy Hearts

    • Predictable Paws: While your spouse is away, your own schedule might be operating merely on survival mode, but try to keep your fur babies on a consistent schedule. Keeping their feeding, potty breaks and play times predictable can help reduce anxiety, and prevent classic "solo week" behavior regressions while their other main household figure is away.
    • Tiny Breaks for Big Hugs: Try to squeeze in 5 uninterrupted minutes of total attention twice a day. This can feel like just one more major task on a crazy solo-parenting list, but those short bursts of full, undivided attention can give your pet way more comfort than hours of simply co-existing alongside you while you run on fumes.

Remember your pets aren’t trying to make your time while your spouse is away any harder...they’re just navigating the empty space on the sofa just like you. By leaning into low effort brain games, having simple routines, and sneaking in a few quick snuggle breaks, you won’t just be surviving solo pet parenting...you will be turning a high stress time into bonding moments to remember. Keep a cup of coffee close by, and let your pet high-five you. You’ve both got this!
