Survival Mode: The Ultimate Solo-Parenting Tips and Tricks Edition

We’ve all been there...when the house or car door closes and your spouse is off to school or a deployment. In an instant you become the sole referee, chief of the house, and only bedtime navigator. All on top of those other roles you play as a stay at home mom like nurse, chauffeur, maid, comfort giver, and time manager. As a military spouse, it’s easy to find ourselves forced to “embrace the suck” along with our spouse when they’re away. Whether it’s a fifteen month deployment or a three month class, we’ve all embraced it with a forced smile.

Juggling everything on the home front is our unspoken mission while our spouse is away. To protect your sanity, you have to form a tactical plan before you find yourself waving the white flag. Give yourself some grace, focus solely on essentials, and hit that "Survival Mode” button.  From the crack of dawn until the kids are tucked in, you’re moving non-stop, until you collapse on the sofa and pass out instantly. The one to the three month mark of their absence is short enough that you’re tempted to just white knuckle it without a plan, but you know in your soul without a routine, you’ll be outmaneuvered and overrun within days.

Kitchen Ceasefire: Low Effort Dinners & Disposables:

  • Diplomatic Dishwashing: Don’t hesitate to use paper plates and plastic silverware, so you don’t declare war on your sink that seems to fill up faster than the laundry basket. Let the Foil Protection Protocol fall into place, and utilize the crockpot liners, air fryer liners, and aluminum foil to help avoid that sink altogether.
  • Air Fryer Amnesty & Crockpot Operations: Relinquish all your rights to your traditional oven unless you’re eating something frozen with little to no prep. Let your crockpot do a 10-hour shift while your part is done in minutes. This frees up extra time and energy you can utilize elsewhere!
  • Snack Board Strategy & Freezer Recruits: Enlist those pre-made meals or zero–cooking spreads while you are trying to survive those hard days. Whether you deploy that quick to assemble snack tray, or you pop that frozen meal into the oven for a five-star, solo-parenting, fine-dining experience.

Operation Screen Time: The Hour Long Truce:

  • Strategic Streaming: Inevitably, we all try to parent to the best of our ability, even if we all know that one person who boasts about zero screen time and "proper face-to-face interaction." Release the judgmental guilt!
  • Securing Radio Silence: Putting on a favorite movie to secure 30 to 60 minutes of uninterrupted peace to finish a task you’ve been fighting to do all day isn’t a parenting failure...it’s a survival asset.
  • Judgmental-Free Truce: Whether you utilize this time to take a breath, take a moment to reset, or tackle the lingering house chore on your own, using the TV is a tactical tool that comes with absolutely no shame.

Sanity Maintenance & Tactical Routines:

  • Laundry Ceasefire: Solo parent is hard enough on its own-accept that the laundry hamper regenerates faster than it’s emptied! You aren’t going to have a surprise inspection, so grant yourself a 24-hour grace period and leave the folding on standby until your energy recharges.
  • One-Sweep Strategy: We all know about the continuous toy invasion during those daylight hours. Stop cleaning them up all day and do one good sweep once the demolition squad hits their cots.
  • Operation Sweatpants: No errands for the day, means continuous pajama duty. Skip the dress-up routine and keep the morale high and operational stress low without wrestling your toddler into their clothes and head-locking them to do their hair for a day.

Personal Sanity Armor:

  • Social Ceasefire: Declining an invitation to a playdate, weekend event, or lunch doesn’t make you a terrible person. Learn to protect your remaining energy and essential self-care on the days that feel like a solo-parent struggle.
  • The Grace Protocol: Ignoring the grocery list for a few extra days, rescheduling your routine cleaning day, or leaving some toys out when you feel too tired to function isn’t failing. It’s giving yourself some grace to keep yourself going until your spouse returns home.
  • Tact: Be proactive instead of reactive to protect your morning sanity. Do a 10-minute “nighttime reset” to start the day smoothly. Without a plan, you’ll fall into that distraction rabbit hole...you wash the dishes, spot a dirty floor, grab the broom, but see the scattered toys, notice the unmade bed, and suddenly you’re falling faster than Alice before you’ve even had your coffee!

Solo-parenting isn’t about perfection- it’s about protecting your sanity and keeping everyone fed and alive. Pick the tactical survival shortcuts that will keep your home front running with ease while your spouse is away, and give yourself the maximum amount of grace in the thick of it. You’re not failing; you’re adapting to high-stress operations. Take it one day at a time, Mom- victory is simply making it to bedtime!
