Make a Simple Pumpkin Spice Latte at Home and Save Money This Fall

October is here; the air has that first real brisk bite to it, and the pumpkin spice fervor is in full swing. You can practically taste that first pumpkin spice latte of the season.

Last October, I actually did the math on my habit and nearly choked on my latte. Three coffee runs a week at $7 each meant I was spending about $84 a month on lattes. That was the moment I put down the drive-through cup and picked up a whisk!

So here's the homemade pumpkin spice latte I've been making ever since. It costs a fraction of a coffee shop version, and I'd put it up against the drive-through version on a lazy Tuesday morning. No fancy espresso machine. No barista training required. Just a few simple ingredients, a mug, and about five minutes.

For military families, having an easy coffee shop favorite you can make at home can be especially useful. Whether you're trying to cut back on everyday spending, living somewhere that does not have a coffee shop nearby, or simply want a cozy fall treat before the day gets busy, this recipe has you covered!

The Star Ingredient: Instant Espresso

I'll be honest. I judged instant coffee for a long time. I just assumed it was something you drank when you had no other option, like the emergency coffee hiding at the bottom of a care package. Let's just say I made my fair share of assumptions, but I'd never actually made a proper drink with it myself.

Then I saw a recipe trending online and decided to finally try NESCAFÉ® Gold Espresso Instant Coffee. After that, I had to quietly retire my snobbery. It dissolves easily and adds a rich espresso flavor without requiring an espresso machine, which makes it a convenient option for a five-minute homemade latte.

If you are making this recipe for a military family living overseas, stationed somewhere remote, or simply trying to make fewer trips to the coffee shop, instant espresso also makes it easy to keep the ingredients on hand.

What You'll Need

  • 1 tablespoon NESCAFÉ® Gold Espresso Instant Coffee
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • 1 ¼ cup milk
  • 2 ½  tablespoons pumpkin puree
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon Mexican Vanilla
  • 1 ½  tablespoons caramel coffee syrup, to taste
  • 1 scoop of ice, or however much you like
  • Whipped cream, optional

Whole milk gives you the creamiest result, but skim milk or your preferred milk alternative can work too.

Let's Make It

Step One: Make the espresso base

Dissolve the NESCAFÉ® Gold Espresso in the hot water. Stir until it is fully combined and set it aside.

Step Two: Make the pumpkin milk

Warm your milk on the stovetop over medium-low heat. While it is heating, whisk in the pumpkin puree, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.

Keep whisking so the pumpkin fully incorporates into the milk. You want the mixture to be smooth rather than lumpy.

Quick honest note: pumpkin puree can be a little stubborn. If you get a few small flecks at the bottom of your mug, that's normal. It won't affect the taste.

Also, watch your heat here. I've scorched the milk by walking away to answer a text, and it does not improve the flavor.

Step Three: Add the sweetness

Once the milk mixture is warm, but not boiling, stir in your caramel coffee syrup. Start with one tablespoon, taste it, and then decide if you want more.

I personally land at about 1.5-2 tablespoons, but I learned the hard way before I got there! I once poured straight out of the container without tasting first and ended up with something closer to dessert than a latte.

Step Four: Combine everything

Pour your espresso into your favorite mug, then pour the pumpkin milk mixture right over it. Give it a gentle stir. Then, add your ice if you like an iced latte like me, or keep it warm if you’re a hot coffee drinker!

Step Five: Finish your PSL

Top with whipped cream if you want an extra treat, then add a little cinnamon or nutmeg.

Wrap your hands around the mug and just take a second.

That's your fall PSL, homemade and done well on a budget!

Doing The Math

If you're doing the PSL math at the end of the month, you already know how quickly coffee shop runs can add up. At roughly $6 to $8 per latte, getting three coffees a week could mean spending approximately $72 to $96 a month.

Making your latte at home can help bring that cost down, especially when you already have some of the ingredients in your pantry. The exact cost per serving will depend on the prices of your milk, espresso, pumpkin puree, and syrup, but it comes out to under $3 per serving on average.

MONEY SAVER

Coffee shop latte: Approximately $6 to $8 each
Three coffee shop lattes per week: Approximately $72 to $96 per month
Homemade latte: Cost varies based on ingredients and servings made, but averages under $3 per serving.

The savings can be especially useful for military families working within a budget or trying to cut back on small purchases that add up over time.

And if you're in a season of life where the nearest coffee shop is a twenty-minute drive or simply doesn't exist- hello, remote base living- having a solid homemade option isn't just budget-friendly. It's a small, warm, seasonal ritual you can actually count on.

A Few Things To Note

The pumpkin puree is doing real work here, so don't swap it out for pumpkin spice seasoning alone. The puree gives the drink a subtle body that makes it taste rich and earthy.

The caramel syrup is where you can really up the sweetness! Start with one tablespoon and work your way up. You can always add more, but you can't take it back out.

Want to make the recipe your own? Try these simple adjustments:

  • Less sweet: Start with 1 tablespoon of syrup and increase to taste
  • More spice: Add a small pinch of pumpkin pie spice or extra cinnamon.
  • Dairy-free: Use your favorite non-dairy milk.
  • Extra creamy: Use whole milk or half and half
  • Iced: Let the pumpkin milk mixture cool, then pour it over ice and add the espresso.

Make It a Fall Care Package

A small jar containing the dry ingredients, a card with the recipe, and a few seasonal treats can make a thoughtful care package or doorstep gift.

It is also an easy way to bring a little taste of fall to someone who may not be home for the season.

For military families separated by a deployment, training, a PCS, or distance, small comforts can go a long way. A homemade PSL kit is inexpensive, easy to put together, and something the recipient can actually use.

One More Fall Idea

A homemade PSL doesn't have to be an everyday replacement for your favorite coffee shop. It can simply be another option to keep in your back pocket when you want something cozy without spending $7 on a single drink.

And if you're looking for an easy seasonal gift, a basket full of ingredients can become a genuinely sweet surprise for a friend, neighbor, military family, or loved one.

Whether you're making this on a gray Tuesday morning before anyone else is awake, enjoying it after a long day, or packing the ingredients into a care package for someone who could use a cozy moment, I hope it hits exactly right.
