Paws-itively Peppermint: Candy Cane Christmas Dog Treats for Your Pup!

Posted on December 9, 2024 by Rachel Slack

The holiday season is here, and that means it’s time for festive treats for every member of the family, including our furry friends! Candy Cane Christmas Dog Treats are the perfect way to let your pup join in on the holiday fun. They’re made with wholesome, dog-safe ingredients and are shaped like the iconic candy cane. These treats are as adorable as they are tasty!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour (or gluten-free flour if your dog is sensitive)
  • 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup of peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free, as xylitol is toxic to dogs)
  • Red food coloring (natural beet powder or other dog-safe food coloring)
  • Water as needed

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Combine the flour, applesauce, and peanut butter in a mixing bowl.
  4. Blend together until a dough forms, adding a little water if necessary to get a smooth consistency. The dough should be easy to roll out but not too sticky. Add a little flour if the dough is sticky.
  5. Remove one half of the dough from the mixing bowl and set it aside. Add a few drops of red food coloring to the half still in the mixing bowl. Knead the red dough until the color is evenly distributed, adding more food coloring if you’d like a brighter red.
  6. Pinch off small pieces of each dough and roll them into thin ropes.
  7. Form candy canes by twisting one red and one natural-colored rope together. Gently shape them into a candy cane and place on a lined baking sheet. Repeat until you’ve used all the dough.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes. The treats should be firm and lightly golden. Let them cool completely before giving them to your dog.

Storing the Treats

Once cooled, store these festive treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze for longer storage.

The Peppermint Perks

These Candy Cane Dog Treats make a cute, Instagram-worthy addition to your holiday celebrations and give your dog a wholesome snack they’ll love. They’re a PAWS-itively perfect gift for your pup and a homemade holiday surprise for your dog-loving friends.

Remember, while these treats are safe for most dogs, keep portions small, and check with your vet if your pup has any special food needs.
