If you’re a cat owner, you know the holidays bring more than just festive cheer. They also bring endless temptations for your feline friend. Shiny ornaments, twinkling lights, and dangling ribbons are practically an invitation for cats to wreak havoc on your decorations. This year though, I managed to keep my cat, Luna, out of the Christmas chaos with a few simple strategies.

First, I made sure to secure the tree. I used a sturdy base and positioned it in a corner, away from Luna’s usual play zones. To deter her even more, I wrapped the bottom half of the tree in a tree skirt and avoided hanging any ornaments on the lower branches. I knew anything within her reach would quickly become a toy. So the fragile, tempting decorations were placed up high on the tree.

Second, I created a dedicated space for Luna. Cats love new, cozy spots, so I set up a small area with her favorite blanket and some new toys. By giving her a place that felt special, she was less interested in the decorations. I even sprinkled a little catnip on her blanket to make it extra appealing.

Third, I used citrus-scented sprays around the tree and garland. Cats generally dislike the smell of citrus, so I lightly sprayed it on areas I didn’t want her to venture. It worked like a charm, she avoided the tree without any stress or scolding from me.

Finally, I made sure to spend extra time playing with her. A well-exercised, stimulated cat is less likely to get into trouble. By keeping her busy with interactive toys, Luna has less interest in climbing the tree or batting at ornaments.

With these simple steps, Luna stays out of the holiday décor, and we can enjoy a peaceful Christmas season!
