Car Insurance Basics

I don’t know about you, but when I had to obtain my own auto insurance for the first time, I was at a total loss. It wasn’t until I started working in insurance, that I finally felt like I had a grasp on what different coverages actually meant. Although I am no longer licensed in insurance, I have 6 years of experience selling auto, home, and umbrella insurance policies. During my time as a licensed agent, I also obtained my Associates in Insurance through The Institutes, and this is knowledge I still carry with me today! I’d like to give you some general information, but nothing below should be construed as insurance advice. Talk to your insurance agent with any questions!

How do you decide where to shop for insurance? I’m a typical millennial and don’t like talking on the phone unless I have to. Thankfully, there are a lot of options to quote a policy online! When you are deciding which carrier to go with, it is good to read reviews about the company. Make sure to take time to research different companies.  U.S. News has a great article that shares their best/preferred companies for different scenarios, but also has reviews on each individual company! This is really important because you don’t want to be left high and dry after an auto accident. You want to feel confident that your carrier will help you when you need them the most! You might also want to check out Insurance Financial ratings. These are scores given to carriers based on their ability to pay claims.  Again, this is important because you want to make sure that the carrier can keep their promise to indemnify you if you face a loss!

Adulting can be scary sometimes, but with some basic knowledge, you can better arm yourself to get the best insurance for you. I hope this gives you more confidence when you shop for insurance, or when you review your policy annually. Your licensed agent will be your best asset when reviewing your coverages, but this will hopefully educate you for that discussion!
