Overcoming Winter Blues: My Journey to a Happier Winter

Every winter, I find myself staring out the window at 4:30 p.m., shocked by how dark it already is. Winter can feel like a long, gray tunnel, and for years, I dreaded the cold months (unless there’s Christmas festivities happening or snow involved). However, instead of letting the winter blues take over, I decided to tackle them head-on.

Here Are a Few Tips to Beat the Winter Blues:

  • First, lean into light therapy. A friend recommended light therapy, and let me tell you—it’s a game-changer. Sitting in front of a lamp for 20 minutes while sipping coffee in the morning not only can brighten your mood, but also tricks your brain into thinking you’ve been basking in sunlight.
  • Then, there’s movement. Don’t hibernate during winter, avoiding exercise like the plague. Start small—just a brisk 10-minute walk bundled up in your coziest scarf and gloves. It’s amazing what fresh air and movement can do. Even on snow days, turn on a dance workout video and let loose. Your dog may judge you, but your endorphins don’t.
  • Another surprising helper for you? A splash of color. Your surroundings can contribute to your blah mood. Swap out dark throw pillows for bright ones and add cheerful plants (hello, resilient pothos!). It may sound simple, but walking into a lively, cozy space every day is a serious mood boost.
  • Staying connected is equally important. Winter has a way of isolating us, so start scheduling weekly “coffee chats” with friends—virtual or in person. Laugh, vent, and keep each other accountable for staying out of your funks. It’s comforting to know we’re all in this together.
  • Lastly, give yourself permission to embrace winter self-care. Instead of wishing away the season, lean into its cozy side. Think fuzzy socks, hot chocolate, and curling up with a book under a weighted blanket. You can even start journaling to track what’s been lifting your spirits, which will help you stay intentional.

Winter still isn’t 100% my favorite season, but with some of these habits, I’m no longer dreading it. Instead of seeing winter as a struggle, I now see it as a time to slow down, reset, and find joy in the little things. If you’re battling the blues too, try a few of these tips—I promise, brighter days are ahead.
