Get Out & Explore: Let’s Go for a Hike!

After a long winter, there is nothing I enjoy more than getting out of the house. When the weather warms up, I start thinking of all the outdoor activities I can take part in. I discovered hiking a few years ago, and I must say, I really enjoy it.

The first thought of a grueling hike was not appealing to me, but surprisingly, I found that it can be quite relaxing. You can pick your route based on your experience and comfort level. The result is usually a beautiful, scenic view and a great workout. I also love the fact that the whole family can do it together, especially since my kids are focused on video games these days instead of enjoying nature.  We get to walk and talk while soaking up some sun. It’s really a great bonding experience!

You don’t have to be a top athlete to go hiking and you don’t need to climb the tallest hill or mountain. Your local park probably even offers trails that you never even knew existed.

Here are some tips:

  • Plan Ahead: Choose a trail and check the weather.
  • Hydrate: Grab your favorite water bottle, and make sure you drink water before, during, and after your hike. Also, energy bars are great snacks too.
  • Dress appropriately: Select a pair of hiking boots or shoes that will protect your feet and heels and provide comfort for walking long distances. Also wear loose fitting clothing so you don’t get overheated.
  • Pack the essentials: Make sure your phone is fully charged and bring it with you. I also recommend packing sunscreen, extra water, a first aid kit and insect repellent.
  • Communicate your plans: Tell someone your plans and leave detailed information in case of emergencies.
  • Grab a buddy: Hiking with a friend or group is safer, especially for beginners. It’s also fun to have someone to talk to and for motivation.
  • Know your limits: Understand your abilities and what you can handle, don’t overdo it.

Get out of the house and enjoy all that nature has to offer. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. You may find yourself tired or a bit sore afterward, but it gets easier.
