Posted on April 4, 2025 by Cassi Anderson
As a milspouse, I have always struggled with finding relatable books and content for my three kiddos! Over my seventeen years as a milspouse, I have accumulated what resources and stories I could to help explain the trials and tribulations that we often face as a military family. From frequent moves, family separations, and deployments, we have faced it all! Below you’ll see some of our favorites! We hope that your family loves these stories as much as we do!
- Nubs:The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine, & a Miracle is a heartwarming story by Major Brian Dennis, Kirby Larson, and Mary Nethery. Nubs is an Iraqi dog that had his world changed when he met Major Brian Dennis. In this true story of friendship, we learn that with friendship you can conquer almost anything!
- Maggie The Military Rat is the debut novel by featured author Monica Voicu Denniston. In this beautifully illustrated story, we follow along as Maggie struggles to find a way to serve our troops!
- Night Catch is a deployment story by Brenda Ehrmantraut. In this story, we follow along as a deployed solider finds a way to connect with his son from across the pond.
- Slumberkins Otter Board Book and Snuggler, by Family Therapist Kelly Oriand and Elementary Educator Callie Christensen, is the perfect tool to use when your loved ones have to be separated! This is the perfect story to help little ones when dealing with the distance of a TDY, deployment, or just being away from family. Otter comes with a little heart that can be given to your separated loved one to show your little one that we’re always connected no matter the distance!
- Slumberkins Fox Kin and Board Books, by Family Therapist Kelly Oriand and Elementary Educator Callie Christensen, is the perfect tool to use when your loved ones have deal with change. Fox can help kids understand that although change is difficult your love will remain the same. This is great one for military kids, because we often deal with family changes, whether it be deployments or frequent moves.
- Slumberkins Sprite Kin and Board Books, by Family Therapist Kelly Oriand and Elementary Educator Callie Christensen, is the perfect tool to use when your loved ones are dealing with a loss.
- The ABCs of the Army is written by military spouse Maria Cordova. This book is a great tool to get your kids involved in all the different terms that they may hear during their Army life!
I hope your family enjoys these stories as much as much as we do! So cuddle up with a good book, and truly appreciate the resilience and strength of your military child!
