Sunset Strolls: Making the Most of Dusky Walks with Your Dog
Posted on October 2, 2025 by Kevin Findley
I enjoy walks at sunset with my favorite companion. No, that’s not part of an online dating profile, it’s what we say to our family dog before taking her for a stroll. Daisy doesn’t like the extra hours stuck inside, but it’s worth it to keep her healthy and safe.
So, why do it? It’s healthier for your pet and for you! Your dog needs extended periods of exercise whenever possible. Throwing a ball from one end of the house to the other a dozen times doesn’t count. If doing that leaves you out of breath, you probably need the walk more than your pet.
Yes, being out in this crazy weather isn’t always ideal (are we doing sweater weather or do we need a tank top), but preparing for a sunset walk makes all the difference. Let’s be honest, getting ready for a dog walk often feels more time-consuming than a solo run. Eliminate the excuse and wait for the sun to set.
Tips for Safe Sunset Walks:
- Check the Ground: If the pavement is still hot to the touch, it’s too hot for paws. Stick to dirt or grass.
- Stay Visible: Use reflective or light-up collars, vests, or leashes, for both you and your pup.
- Bring a Flashlight: Less light means longer shadows, and you’ll still need to scoop those poops.
- Stay Mindful: Evening temperatures can vary, so make sure your walk is comfortable and safe.
Now, I just need to get Daisy to quit pulling on the leash. That may sound simple, but when the Dread Princess of the Sith wants to run, she runs!
