Build a Festive Light Bulb Gift for Cat Parents
Posted on December 11, 2025 by Rachel Slack
If there’s one thing military families know how to do, it’s get creative with holiday cheer, especially when we are mailing gifts across distances, jumping between duty stations, and doing everything we can to make the season feel magical.
When I started putting together a Christmas gift for my friend’s cat, I stumbled on something so festive, so adorable, and so perfectly “cat mom core” that I knew I had to share it with the Military Cat Club.
I found these giant 15-inch Christmas light bulbs at Walmart, big enough to fill with toys, treats, and holiday goodies, but small enough to ship without turning into a full-blown PCS shipment. Suddenly, the ultimate cat-themed holiday care package was born.
Think of it like a stocking… but way cuter. Festive, bright, impossible to miss, and 100% customizable.
Inside the giant bulb, I packed it with everything a spoiled cat would dream of, which FYI all these food items qualifies you to be apart of the Military Cat Club too:
What Went Into the Light Bulb:
- Holiday spring toys
- A Christmas tree catnip toy
- Fancy Feast treats
- Friskies Party Mix treats
- Whisker Lickin’s treats
- DentaLife treats
All brightly colored, jingly, crunchy, and festive enough to make the bulb look like a little Christmas treasure chest.
Then, I tied a ribbon around the base and placed a Christmas candy cane collar right on top so it looks like part decoration, part gift, and 100% holiday magic.
Her cat’s favorite foods were not getting stuffed into a 15-inch bulb (though I did consider it for a moment before logic kicked back in):
- Purina ONE + Pro Plan canned food
- Merrick Bone Broth pouches
They’re staying outside the bulb for two reasons. One they do not fit (the cans said absolutely not), and the bone broth is a hard no for enclosed containers unless you want a holiday slip-and-slide in your shipping box. Adding them outside the bulb made the package feel like a little holiday haul, part cozy cat pantry refresh, part festive fun.
Military families are constantly sending care packages, to loved ones, friends stateside, friends OCONUS, and sometimes even to ourselves. We cannot forget about the pets! Those deserve something unique. You are not just sending treats, you are sending a little piece of holiday decor, something that instantly lights up a room (pun absolutely intended).
How to Make Your Own Giant Light Bulb Cat Gift:
- Step 1: Find the giant plastic Christmas light bulbs
- Craft stores, Amazon, Walmart, Target holiday aisles, they are everywhere this time of year.
- Step 2: Fill it with lightweight, jingly treats and toys
- Think: catnip toys, springs, feathers, poufs, crunchy treats in cute packaging, etc.
- Step 3: Tie a ribbon around the base
- Add festive colors, bells, or a holiday tag.
- Step 4: Attach a themed collar to the base
- Candy cane, peppermint stripe, red velvet bow, anything adorable.
- Step 5: Add any canned foods or broths outside the bulb
- Wrap them, add tissue, and place them in the box alongside.
- Step 6: Pack and ship with love
- And maybe a little cat hair. For authenticity of course.
With military life, distance does not stop us from showing up for the people (and pets) we love. Sending a giant Christmas light bulb filled with treats isn’t just festive, it is thoughtful, creative, and guaranteed to make a military cat parent smile the moment the box opens.
Whether they’re in the next state, the next duty station, or halfway across the world, this little bundle of holiday joy reminds them they are loved, and their cat is spoiled, as they should be.
