Viva San Antonio
Posted on April 26, 2023 by Amanda Aguirre-Carreon
Viva Fiesta! That’s the saying here in San Antonio around this time. April in San Antonio can bring great weather, yummy food, and tons of fun! Fiesta here in San Antonio is 2 weeks of family fun. You can find many events happening each day during this time.
One of my favorites is Night in Old San Antonio or NIOSA for short. This event consists of over hundred food booths from different cultures including Mexican food, Irish traditions, German favorites, French dishes, Chinese cuisine, and American staples. They have an entire section designed for the little ones that includes tons of games, face painting, and all of the favorite foods that kiddos love.
Another favorite is the King William Fair. This happens for one day in our King William District downtown and is not only filled with yummy food but also tons of vendors, local artist, and tons of handmade crafts that people sell. We have found lots of our artwork here as well as super cute handmade purses, shirts, mugs, and other items.
The Taste of New Orleans is a two day festival that shows off the greatness of Louisiana traditions! From music to food, The Taste (for short) is guaranteed to hit every box on your Cajun food checklist.
What is Fiesta without parades? Oh yes, we have those too! The Battle of Flowers Parade is the day parade in which we celebrate the heroes of the Alamo and the victory at the Battle of San Jacinto. The night parade, or the Flambeau Parade, is quite the treat! Both parades are filled with high school and college marching bands from all over the country, floats for different organizations, and tons of entertainment! Aside from these events, there are literally over a hundred different events that take place over the two week timeframe. First is such a fun time here in San Antonio. If you ever get a chance you have to come visit during this time!
Visiting downtown San Antonio for Fiesta isn’t the only thing to do here. If you come to San Antonio you have to visit Hemisfair. A really cool playground, a sand pit, and a splash pad is everything you need for hours of fun. There’s also coffee shops, some restaurants, and more within walking distance for you to visit as well. They have also broke ground on a new addition to Hemisfair that features beautiful trees, a green space, and water features for those hot days! This should be ready by Spring of 2024. Down the street from Hemisfair, you will find the Shops at Rivercenter which houses Legoland Discovery Center + Sea Life. (Don’t forget to check with your ITT for discounted tickets or snag the Military Passes on the Legoland Discovery Center website!) You can walk on the Riverwalk, grab a bite to eat, and ride the river boats to learn about San Antonio history. Then you have The Alamo. Now I will be honest, I have not been there since I was a child, but visiting San Antonio without visiting The Alamo would be a travesty! After you hit The Alamo, walk a bit further and grab a tasty treat from Voodoo Donuts! They are open 24 hours and the donuts are delicious.
The hotels downtown are reasonably priced and all are very tourist friendly. From budget-friendly to upscale, the hotels in downtown San Antonio are great! The majority all in walking distance of the Riverwalk and the tourist attractions downtown. We have stayed downtown several times for staycations. My kiddos love hotels! This is just a fraction of what San Antonio has to offer! Come down and check it out for yourself!
