Here are some handy tips and tricks I’ve learned when traveling abroad!

Bring an empty water bottle.

Water is harder to come by in European counties, even in some restaurants, and sometimes they may make you pay for it.

Currency

Have just a few coins in the proper currency.

Don’t have too much as many places take credit cards or Apple Pay, BUT there are a few times (I.e., public bathrooms) that only take coins!!! So always good to have a few handy

Pack lightly

We usually pack our hiking backpacks; it’s easier moving around, especially when taking public transport or walking to our Airbnb/ hotel.

Take pictures but be sure to enjoy the scenery.

I find myself constantly taking pictures, but I’ve learned to snap a picture put the phone down, and soak it all in.

Walk!

If you can, walking is the best way to see a new area! We’ve stumbled upon some beautiful hidden gems from just walking.

Explore local fare

At least eat at one local restaurant that serves up the local cuisine! Be open to trying new things!

Want to save money? Check out a local grocery store. You’ll be sure to find delicious local food options.

Tipping

It is not necessary and usually added to the bill; most of where I have been do not work for tips.

But always beneficial to do a quick research on what is customary in each country.

Know the pleasantries of the language.

Yes, the majority of people speak English, but it’s a common courtesy to know some pleasantries:

Hello

Please

Thank you

Goodbye

Where is the bathroom?

Do your research/Book ahead

Look up the top-rated things to do and make a list of the items you want to do and see, have a plan which leads to my next tip…

Book tours ahead of time as they are cheaper and sometimes fill up fast

A few times, we didn’t do this and missed out!

Last but not least…ENJOY!!!
