Savoring Summer (and Every Bowl of It)
Posted on August 8, 2025 by Rachel Slack
Summer’s not quite over, but the rhythm is changing. The days are still warm, but the mornings feel quieter. Slower. We’re not rushing out the door for road trips or shuffling through PCS boxes anymore.
Bruce and I? We’re settling back into a groove.
Our mornings look like this: a little stretch, sunlight pouring through the window, and the sound of kibble hitting the bowl. That sound? That’s Bruce’s cue. Tail wagging, eyes locked in. He knows it’s Purina ONE Dry Dog Food time, and he’s obsessed. Real meat, crunchy bites, and somehow it keeps his energy up and his coat looking like he just walked out of a groomer.
After breakfast, we wander the neighborhood before it gets too hot. He sniffs and pees on every corner like he’s the mayor. Sometimes we sit on the curb and just…exist. Military life moves fast. But mornings like these? They’re golden.
I grab Bruce’s food through Click2Go at the Commissary, one less thing to remember when my brain’s full of base paperwork and chaos. They bring it right to the car, and Bruce gets to judge my snack choices from the backseat. Win-win. (I share my snacks with him too).
Even though the pace is shifting, summer isn’t gone yet. There’s still time for sunset walks, splashing in the hose, and late dinners on the patio with Bruce under the table, waiting for crumbs.
We’re soaking it in, one bowl, one belly rub, one slow morning at a time.
Because when you’ve got your best friend next to you and a full bag of Purina ONE in the pantry, life feels a little more grounded…even when everything else is moving.
