Our Other Family Table: Thanksgiving with the Guard
Posted on October 30, 2025 by Kalina Hyche
When most people picture Thanksgiving, they imagine a table surrounded by relatives, food, and tradition. For National Guard families, there is often another table that feels just as important. It is the one inside the armory.
Here, Soldiers, Airmen, spouses, and kids gather shoulder to shoulder. It is not about perfect dishes or Pinterest-worthy spreads. Instead, it is about the comfort of sitting with the people who share your mission, your sacrifices, and your victories. This Guard family table reminds us that service is more than a uniform. It is a community.
Every unit has its heartbeat during these holiday gatherings. Sometimes it is the first sergeant making sure every Soldier has a seat. Other times it is the commander who never misses a chance to check in. It might even be a spouse who shows up with an extra plate just in case someone forgot theirs. Those little moments of care create a sense of belonging. Even when duty keeps us away from relatives, a Guard Thanksgiving gives us a place where we are known and valued. The turkey might be simple, but the shared stories and laughter make the holiday rich.
Military life rarely follows a predictable calendar. Deployments, training schedules, and drill weekends often cut across holidays. Yet when a unit sits down together in November, it becomes a reminder that no one carries the load alone. Instead of focusing on what we may miss at home, Guard families create their own traditions inside the armory. It is a celebration that shows resilience, connection, and gratitude.
So, when your unit gathers this season, take your place at the table. Bring your appetite, bring your family, and bring your willingness to connect. Most of all, notice the way your Guard family makes space for you, because that is the heart of it all. A Thanksgiving table that feels like home.
