Same

Titles and pay grades

Coast Guard ranks use the same titles, abbreviations, and pay grades as Navy ranks, from Seaman Recruit to Admiral.

Enlisted members hold a rate and a rating, just as sailors do. See Navy ranks for how a rate and a rating combine into a title.

Different

Officer insignia

Coast Guard officers wear the Coast Guard shield on sleeves and shoulder boards where Navy line officers wear a star.

Different

Warrant grades and department

The Coast Guard uses chief warrant officer grades W-2 to W-4 only. It serves in the Department of Homeland Security and can operate as a service in the Navy when Congress or the President directs, such as in time of war.

Coast Guard Ranks and Pay

How rank and pay grade connect

Coast Guard pay is set by pay grade, not by rank title, so a Coast Guard Petty Officer Second Class earns the same basic pay as a Navy sailor at E-5. Basic pay rises with each pay grade and with years of service, and housing and food allowances are paid on top of it.
