Space Force Ranks and Pay

How rank and pay grade connect

Space Force pay is set by pay grade, not by rank title, so a Space Force Sergeant earns the same basic pay as an Air Force Staff Sergeant at E-5. Basic pay rises with each pay grade and with years of service, and housing and food allowances are paid on top of it.

Space Force Ranks FAQ

Quick answers to the most searched Space Force rank questions

Space Force enlisted ranks in order are Specialist 1, Specialist 2, Specialist 3, Specialist 4, Sergeant, Technical Sergeant, Master Sergeant, Senior Master Sergeant, and Chief Master Sergeant. Officer ranks run from Second Lieutenant (O-1) to General (O-10), the same as the Air Force.

General (O-10) is the highest Space Force rank, and the Chief of Space Operations is a General. The most senior enlisted Guardian is the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, who advises the Chief of Space Operations on enlisted matters.

Specialist 1 (Spc1), pay grade E-1, is the lowest Space Force rank. Guardians move up through Specialist 2, 3, and 4 before they become noncommissioned officers on promotion to Sergeant (E-5). Specialist 1 is the Space Force equivalent of an Airman Basic in the Air Force.

Partly. Space Force officer ranks use the same titles as the Air Force, and enlisted titles match from Technical Sergeant (E-6) to Chief Master Sergeant (E-9). The E-1 to E-5 titles differ: Specialist 1 to 4 and Sergeant in the Space Force, Airman Basic to Staff Sergeant in the Air Force.

No. The Space Force does not use warrant officers, so it has no W-1 to W-5 ranks. Every uniformed Guardian serves as an enlisted member or a commissioned officer, and officer ranks run from Second Lieutenant (O-1) to General (O-10).

A Guardian is a member of the U.S. Space Force, the way a soldier serves in the Army or a sailor in the Navy. The Space Force announced the name in December 2020, and it applies to the service's military and civilian members.
