2026 Military Pay Chart: Basic Pay by Rank (3.8% Raise)
The 2027 military pay raise has not been finalized. The President's FY2027 budget request proposes a tiered 7-6-5% increase averaging about 6.2% across the force, while the Senate Armed Services Committee's version of the NDAA calls for 3.6% under the standard ECI formula. Once Congress passes the FY2027 NDAA, we will publish the confirmed 2027 military pay chart here with rates effective January 1, 2027.
Starting on January 1, 2026, service members received a 3.8% basic pay raise. Use the official 2026 military pay chart below to look up monthly pay by grade and time in service for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

About the 2026 Military Pay Chart
Authorized by the FY26 NDAA, signed December 18, 2025
The 2026 military pay chart reflects a 3.8% across-the-board increase to basic pay for all active-duty, Guard, and Reserve members. The raise was authorized by the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which President Trump signed into law on December 18, 2025. The new rates took effect January 1, 2026.
Basic pay is determined by two factors: your pay grade (E-1 through E-9 for enlisted, W-1 through W-5 for warrant officers, and O-1 through O-10 for commissioned officers) and your years of creditable service. Pay rates are identical across all six branches, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force.
Alongside the 3.8% basic pay raise, the 2026 NDAA included an average 4.2% national increase to Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) and a 2.4% increase to Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS).

Factors That Affect Your 2026 Military Pay
Basic pay is only the foundation; these elements shape your real take-home
Pay Grade and Years of Service
Basic pay rises in two ways: each promotion moves you to a higher row in the paychart, and each longevity step (Over 2, Over 4, Over 6, and so on) moves you to the right within your row.
Allowances (BAH and BAS)
Most service members receive at least two non-taxable allowances. BAH covers off-base housing and varies by ZIP, grade, and dependents. BAS covers food costs and is a flat monthly rate.
Special and Incentive Pay
Service members in specific duty assignments or skill areas may earn additional monthly amounts: flight pay, sea pay, submarine duty pay, hazardous duty pay, hostile fire pay, and others.
O-1E, O-2E, and O-3E Rates
Commissioned officers who served over 4 years of prior active enlisted or warrant officer service receive higher basic pay than standard officer rates at the same grade.

Housing Allowance
Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)
BAH offsets the cost of off-base housing and is calculated by ZIP code, pay grade, and dependency status. The 2026 national average increased 4.2%, though your individual rate can rise, fall, or stay flat depending on local housing-market data.

When Does Military Pay Change?
The timing rules for raises, longevity steps, and promotions
Annual Pay Raise
January 1
Annual military pay increases take effect on January 1 each year. For 2026, the 3.8% raise hit LES statements in mid-January 2026, paid on the standard mid-month payday.
Longevity Step
Automatic
Longevity step increases happen automatically when you cross a years-of-service threshold (Over 2, Over 4, Over 6, and so on). DFAS updates your rate at the first pay period after the date.
Promotion-Driven Raise
Effective date
Promotion-driven raises happen as soon as you pin on the new rank and the action is processed into the pay system. Promotion typically produces the largest single-event pay increase.
Why Military Pay Increases Each Year
The Employment Cost Index, the ECI formula, and Congress's role
The annual military basic pay raise is tied by law to the Employment Cost Index (ECI), a measure of private-sector wage and salary growth published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The October ECI year-over-year change becomes the automatic pay raise percentage for the following calendar year unless Congress legislates a different amount.
For 2026, the October 2024 ECI release showed a 3.8% year-over-year change in wages and salaries, which became the default planning figure. Congress kept the 3.8% number intact through the entire FY2026 NDAA cycle. The pay-raise formula is codified at U.S.C. Title 37, Chapter 19, §1009.
The logic behind tying military pay to private-sector wage growth is straightforward: it helps the armed services remain competitive with civilian employers for talent. When private wages rise faster than military pay, recruiting and retention typically suffer.
How to Confirm Your 2026 Pay on Your LES
Three quick steps to verify the new rates hit your paycheck
1
Log into myPay
Visit mypay.dfas.mil and log in with your DoD-issued credentials. Your most recent Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) appears under the "LES" menu. New LES files post each pay period, and back-statements remain available for at least 12 months.
2
Find the Entitlements section
The top portion of the LES lists your entitlements — including basic pay, BAH, BAS, and any special pays. Compare your "BASE PAY" line against the 2026 paychart above for your grade and years of service. The dollar figure should match (within rounding) the cell that corresponds to your status.
3
Flag any discrepancy with finance
If your basic pay doesn't match the 2026 rate, contact your unit's payroll or finance office immediately. For Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Space Force, you can also call DFAS at 1-888-332-7411. Coast Guard members should contact their administrative yeoman or the Pay & Personnel Center at 1-866-772-8724.

Common questions about the 2026 raise, allowances, and LES verification
Military basic pay increased 3.8% across all ranks effective January 1, 2026. The raise applied to active-duty, Guard, and Reserve members. Unlike 2025 (which included a targeted additional bump for E-1 to E-4), the 2026 raise was uniform across the entire pay chart.
The new rates took effect January 1, 2026. Most service members saw the change reflected on their mid-January LES, paid on the standard DFAS 1st-and-15th schedule.
Yes. Basic pay is identical for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. All branches use the same DFAS pay table, and the only factors that change your basic pay are your pay grade and your creditable years of service.
An E-1 with more than 4 months of service earns $2,407.20 per month in 2026. An E-1 with less than 4 months of service earns $2,226 per month. The rate jumps automatically at the four-month mark.
An O-1 with under 2 years of service earns $4,150.20 per month in 2026. After 3 years, that rate increases to $5,222 per month, where it remains until promotion to O-2.
By default, the raise matches the year-over-year change in the Employment Cost Index (ECI) for private-sector wages and salaries, released each October by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Congress can override the ECI through the National Defense Authorization Act, but for 2026, lawmakers kept the formula's 3.8% intact.
No. The 3.8% raise applies only to basic pay. BAH is calculated separately based on local housing-market data; the 2026 national average increased 4.2%, but individual rates by ZIP can rise, fall, or stay flat. BAS increased 2.4% in 2026 to $476.95/month for enlisted and $328.48/month for officers.
The E designation applies to commissioned officers who served over 4 years of active enlisted or warrant officer time before commissioning. O-1E, O-2E, and O-3E rates are higher than the standard O-1/O-2/O-3 columns at the same years-of-service step. Both standard and E rates received the same 3.8% increase in 2026.
Yes; basic pay is subject to federal income tax, FICA (Social Security and Medicare), and state income tax in most states. However, BAH and BAS are tax-free, which significantly increases the effective value of your total compensation compared to a civilian salary of the same gross amount.
A one-time, tax-free $1,776 payment authorized by the FY2026 NDAA, separate from the annual 3.8% pay raise. The payment was issued outside the normal monthly pay cycle and does not affect your ongoing 2026 basic pay rates. The initial distribution is complete.
The official tables are published by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) at dfas.mil under Military Members > Pay Entitlements > Pay Tables. The rates above match the DFAS active-duty pay tables effective January 1, 2026, rounded to the nearest dollar.
Contact your unit's payroll or finance office first. If you need more help, call DFAS at 1-888-332-7411 (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force active duty and Reserve), or 1-800-321-1080 for retirees, survivors, and beneficiaries. Coast Guard members should reach out to their administrative yeoman or the Pay & Personnel Center at 1-866-772-8724.
